The Need: Harvest Home is an Essential Resource in LA County

For the past 35 years, Harvest Home has carried out its mission of transforming the lives of homeless pregnant women and their children by providing housing, support, and programs that equip women to become great mothers. Harvest Home currently provides a nurturing environment through transitional housing and comprehensive programming and services that cultivate an environment where women flourish and thrive. We focus on the following four pillars: nurture, equip, empower, and sustain.

Our Mission: As Homelessness is on the Rise, Harvest Home Must Rise Up

Homelessness in LA County is on the rise, with women and children among the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. The Los Angeles County Health Department reports that close to 5,000 pregnant women are homeless in any given year. With fewer than 70 shelter beds for homeless pregnant women in LA County, the need far exceeds available resources for this vulnerable population.

Harvest Home currently provides 10 beds (15 percent of all beds in the County), but in 2018 alone, Harvest Home received over 500 calls from expectant mothers seeking assistance, confirming a critical unmet need that must be addressed today. A second program site is the most significant way we can make a difference in our community for this generation and the next.

Flourish: Tripling Our Impact Through Our New Program Site

While considering expansion sites, Harvest Home was approached by the Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles with the unique opportunity to open our second residential home in a former convent in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood of Los Angeles. Through a favorable, long-term, renewable lease agreement with the Archdiocese, Harvest Home will occupy a 9,000 square foot facility which will allow us to serve up to 18 women and infants at a time—an additional 50 women annually.

The Campaign: An Investment in Harvest Home is an Investment in Hope and Opportunity

To realize the vision of tripling the number of homeless pregnant women and children served each year, there is a significant investment required over and above the normal fundraising efforts that currently sustain our programs and services. Harvest Home will seek to raise $4 million for immediate capital renovations and furnishing expenses and three years of operations and staffing costs.
